  • Canon: To quote a favourite movie: “What is best in life?” Well, in this case it would be “Good food and good drink!” (yes, does not have the impact of the original line). Well, happily, Canon in Seattle has both, and a hoard of bottled happiness that is awe inspiring and beckons to the adventurous drinker within you (to the sadness of your bank account). A small and delicious menu to compliment their extensive (their “spirits menu” is 186 pages, they boast 4000 labels and counting on their website) bottled libations and delightful cocktails. Do not miss their Ango-Bourbon Nuts, a wonderful mix of cashew, popcorn, and pretzel all tossed in a bourbon and bitters glaze that, as i understand it, has been on the menu since opening. It is a small and fun nosh. However, their hot foods, from roasted bone marrow to ramen to various sandwiches are all beautiful to the eye and delectable to eat. Do book a reservation ahead of time! They are a small restaurant/bar and are quite firm on both capacity and the comfort of their patrons. Plan ahead to best enjoy your outing. Reservations strongly recommended, no dress codes, come as you are!

  • The Doctor’s Office: Ever since The Great Gatsby, i’ve been fascinated with the roaring 20’s, Prohibition, and speakeasies. Well, The Doctor’s Office is exactly that, a speakeasy unobtrusively situated on an unassuming block of Olive Street. Reservation only in a space that is dominated by a 6 (or is it 8?) seat bar and two small tables that will seat between 2-4 per table. The reservations are booked by the hour so be sure to overestimate the time you need as you may indeed wish to linger and explore the Office’s small but wonderful cocktail menu. The interaction is intimate, just you and the barkeep/owner and the atmosphere simply relaxing. Do try the Spanish Coffee… after all, there might be a show that accompany this fiery drink! As a fan of highballs, i had a fun time with the curated highballs on the menu! Reservations required! No dress code.

  • Piroshky Piroshky Bakery: Located at the famed Pike’s Place Market (sure, it is full of tourists, but explore beyond what is in front and discover hidden gems, go on, you know you want to!), Piroshky Piroshky is a stalwart of stuffed bready goodness. It has been our first or second stop on each Seattle visit for years and the Beef and Cheese Piroshky is always satisfying and delightful, warmed or cold (therefor, perfect for a meal or a sudden snack). There are many stalwart piroshkies displayed tantalizingly in their cases, both savory and sweet piroshkies. However, look out for seasonal specials! Another personal favourite is their Bacon, Hashbrown, Egg, and Cheese Piroshky… a perfect breakfast (or lunch, or dinner, or elevenses, or second breakfast/lunch/dinner) on the go or when stationed next to a toaster oven. Walk up service only, will warm up your goodies if requested, may be a line, but they do move quickly. No dress codes.

  • Sushi Kappo Tamura: Serving both local seafood and seafood from the Japanese waters, Sushi Kappo Tamura dishes up well prepared dishes in a casual, comfortable, and well appointed dinning room. If nigiri, sashimi, or hand rolls are not quite your favourite, they also have a wonderful range of Japanese cooked preparations that are well worth exploring! A personal favourite is the variety of “kama” that they offer. Kama is the grilled collar of a fish, simply salted and grilled to perfection — skin crisp and flesh moist and flavourful — it is fish at its best presentation for me. Also do give their Chawan Mushi a try! The spelling may vary between chawamushi/chawan-mushi/chawan mush/chawa mushi, but the dish is always a smooth steamed egg custar with a dashi and sake base that is festooned throughout with delicious and seasonal ingredients. At Sushi Kappo Tamura, the ingredients are invariably the fresh seafood selections on hand and the taste is fantastic and luxurious! The chawan mushi at Sushi Kappo Tamura is served hot, a wonderful dish to order on a chilly rainy Seattle night! Reservations are recommended, bar seats are available. No dress codes, have fun with the sake selections!
